GLEN DALE, West Virginia (WTOV) – Cindy Prettyman’s kidneys are failing, leaving her no choice but to go on dialysis.
In February, she went to the hospital with her son and daughter, and doctors told her it could take years before she gets a transplant.
Her son Jeremy didn’t like that answer and decided to launch his own search for a donor on Craigslist.
Shockingly, that effort paid off.
“He called me the next day and says, ‘Mom I put out an ad on Craigslist,’ and I said, ‘You got to be kidding me, Jeremy what for?’’’ Cindy said.
She said her son wrote that she was a wonderful person and deserves to have a kidney.
“So, it was on Craigslist, and a lady called him two days later and said she would like to (donate),” Cindy said.
It turns out, the woman lives in Unionport outside of Wintersville, where Cindy grew up.
At first, Cindy didn’t know what to expect.
“I said, ‘Who gives a kidney to a total stranger?’ And she said, ‘It’s something that I always wanted to do. I always wanted to give to somebody.”
Jacklyn Malot is the donor. She told Cindy this was meant to be when the two find out they were perfect matches.
They are waiting and hope to have the transplant some time by May or June.
“I can’t comprehend things,” Cindy said. “To me, everything is happening to everyone else. It’s not me yet. It hasn’t sunk into me that it’s going to be me that will get a new kidney.”
