WICHITA, Kansas – The effect of layoffs at Textron is a big issue for Wichita and Sedgwick County.
With the merger of Cessna and Beechcraft, those layoffs are an unfortunate response to the combination of the two long-time Wichita area companies.
KSN spoke to Sedgwick County Commissioner Dave Unruh and Wichita City Councilman Jame Clendenin.
Unruh says that he knows many families are struggling with the news, and he understand that while businesses have to do what is right for the bottom line, it hits the people hard.
“The cyclical nature of the aviation industry seems to bring about these sort of issues. As we go forward, there’s highs and there’s lows. They never seem to be able to fully predict when that’s going to happen, and when things are up, everybody is just happy, but when you have these turn downs in the companies, they have to make these business decisions. It is painful,” said Unruh.
Unruh went on to say that Wichita is a resilient group, and there are a lot of places that can use the skills of our aviation work force.
Wichita City Councilman James Clendenin echoes Unruh’s thoughts.
“It’s not easy. I just want those citizens that are losing their jobs to know that the city of Wichita stands behind them, and we’re going to do everything we can to make sure there is a job available for them.”
