GREAT BEND, Kansas – Each year, Camp Hope offers a fun opportunity for kids battling cancer, but its future may look a lot different after a weekend fire destroyed the dining hall.

Gail Moeder is on the Camp Hope committee.

She talked with KSN about the fire.

“We’re very saddened about the loss, not just for Camp Hope, but for all of the other people who use the Camp Aldrich facilities.”

Camp Hope rented Camp Aldrich for their activities and also stored all of their supplies in the basement of the dining hall.

“Our hope is to be able to go back to Camp Aldrich as soon as possible. Of course, we love it out here,” said Moeder. “We’re looking for a temporary location in Barton County. We’ve already got a lot of activities arranged, so we want to keep that as close to normal as possible.”

There is a plan B already in full swing by the Camp Hope committee.

“Camp will look a little bit different without having the conference center,” added Moeder. “For one thing and not knowing yet where we’re going to be located, it will look different in that aspect, but the way we feel, if we’re all still together, it’s still Camp Hope.”

Investigators hope to have a cause for the blaze later this week.
