Two schools near officer-involved shooting

WICHITA, Kansas – Lawrence Elementary and Mayberry Middle Schools were near the scene of an officer-involved shooting Thursday morning.

The shooting happened before school started for the day.

Both schools opened on time.

“We kept in contact with the police because Lawrence Elementary opened at 9 in case we might have had to worry about traffic and buses going to Lawrence at that time, but it was cleared out about 7:30 or 8 o’clock,” said Susan Arensman, USD 259 district spokeswoman. “Unfortunately, buses didn’t have to be rerouted because they come in from the north so buses were not affected for Mayberry Middle School.”

Arensman says many of the students are bused in, and many students didn’t know what was going on.

“We did have people there in case there was something that disturbed them,” added Arensman. “There were a couple of students who made comments in the hall to their friends or to teachers.”
