Fires in Derby caused by a lawnmower

WICHITA, Kansas – Derby firefighters battled two house fires Monday afternoon.

They broke out around 3 p.m. in the 1600 block of East Cresthill Road in Derby.

One of the homes is at the 1600 block of Cresthill and the other is 1606 Cresthill.

They are both right next to each other.

Brad Smith, the fire chief from Derby, says that the occupant to the west was working on his mower and spilled gas.

When he started the mower, it backfired and started a fire.

It started on the property to the west and the wind whipped the flames to the second house.

Damage is estimated at $150,000 per home, and both homes are considered a total loss because of smoke, fire and water damage.

The owner with the lawn mower was the only one injured.

He suffered some minor burns from trying to put out the fire with a garden hose.
