WICHITA, Kansas – Wichita police have confirmed that a 38-year-old man has been arrested following the shooting of his wife and two sons Monday night.
The shooting happened around 9:20 p.m. in the 300 block of Parkdale Court.
The 13-year-old boy suffered gun shot wound to the head, the 5-year-old was shot near the eye, and the woman was shot in the upper chest area. All are expected to recover.
“I just could not imagine him doing that. I was just shocked, why the 5-year-old, why the 13-year-old,” said Verlean Brown, neighbor.
“I didn’t have any idea, I knew something, you know, things had been going on next door for quite some time, but I didn’t dream that it was that serious, you know,” said Jim Steele, neighbor.
Police say the suspect was arrested hours after the shooting took place in a wooded area near Central and Maize.
“He was transported to an area hospital where he was treated for some superficial cuts to his wrist in an apparent suicide attempt,” said Lt. Randy Reynolds, Wichita Police Department. “He was then transported to the investigations section and was later booked for three cases of attempted murder.”
Police say the couple had a history of domestic violence, with the husband being arrested three different times just this year for incidents involving his wife.
She also had a protection from abuse order against him, but that expired in February.
While police don’t know what exactly caused the argument, they believe it had to do with other children not present at the home.
