WICHITA, Kansas – Wichita police say an alleged sexual assault inside of North High took place between November 1st and December 19th, but it wasn’t reported by the victim’s parents until Tuesday.
Police say somewhere between those dates a 13-year-old student at Wichita North High School was allegedly raped by a 15-year-old.
“The circumstance of which I am not at liberty to go into too much detail on,” said Capt. Doug Nolte, Wichita Police Department.
KSN obtained a police report filed Tuesday morning saying two parents reported the incident to police, saying it happened while the girl was at school.
KSN reached out to officials with USD 259 Wednesday morning shortly after police talked about the incident at their daily media briefing to find out how an alleged incident could have happened at the school.
A district representative said she hadn’t heard anything about the alleged crime and hadn’t heard from police.
While she wouldn’t speak on camera, she said the district takes the allegations seriously.
School officials tell KSN they didn’t have any information about where the alleged incident happened, or if it happened during the school day but said they would cooperate with the police department.
A situation that’s hard to simplify with an investigation that’s starting at most almost five months after the incident.
“I don’t, I don’t know what the delay was for. Sometimes in general there is a period of time before victim decides to come forward. That’s less of our concern as much as it is the report was made, and we can investigate it,” said Nolte.
The head of the Exploited and Missing Child Unit tells KSN that detectives just started their in-depth investigation into this case.
The school district says if the investigation finds that security changes need to happen at the school, they will make those changes.
