ST. LOUIS — After leading his team to a sensational undefeated regular season, sophomore guard Fred VanVleet has raked in the post-season honors given by the Missouri Valley Conference.
Tuesday, the conference announced that VanVleet along with his two teammates, sophomore guard Ron Baker and senior forward Cleanthony Early were all named First Team All-MVC. The honors for VanVleet didn’t stop there though. He was also named to the Defensive First Team with teammate, junior Tekele Cotton. Further more, VanVleet was given the most prestigious conference honor and was named the 2014 MVC Larry Bird Player of the Year.
VanVleet averaged 11.9 points on the season combined with 4.0 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.9 steals. More notable was his overall presence in games as the facilitator of the conferences best offense.
He is the fourth Shocker to win the award, joining Antoine Carr (1983), Xavier McDaniel (1984,1985) and most recently Paul Miller (2006).
With VanVleet leading the way, the Shockers finished 31-0 during the regular season and are currently ranked No. 2 in the national Associated Press poll. This weekend they will continue their journey with the conference’s post-season tournament, Arch Madness in St. Louis, Missouri.
