Elderly man pulls handgun to get wife out of care center

WICHITA, Kansas – Wichita police responded to the Oxford Grand Assisted Living and Memory Care Community after an 84-year-old man pulled a handgun on staff.

Police say he wanted to take his 78-year-old wife with dementia home.

It happened late Thursday night in the 3000 block of North Parkdale Circle.

Staff tell police the man wanted his wife.

They refused and that is when he pointed a gun at them.

“This obviously created a concern for the staff. They tried to get away. He got his wife and took her away from the facility. They (staff) called 911. Police located the two close to that location,” said Capt. Doug Nolte, Wichita Police Department.

Police were able to make the stop without any incident.

The 84-year-old man was booked on aggravated assault and aggravated kidnapping.

His wife was transported back to the care facility.

“What is difficult is the fact he is 84-years-old. This is not typical. Officers tried to use as much care and compassion as possible,” added Nolte.
