WICHITA, Kansas – Lincoln Street near Washington is temporarily closed after a stormwater sewer leak washed out the soil underneath a Union Pacific rail line earlier today, public works officials said.

Drivers and pedestrians are encouraged to take alternate routes to avoid Lincoln, between Santa Fe and Washington, until the road is reopened.

The soil provided important support under the tracks for both rail and vehicular traffic.

Lincoln is closed at Mead.

Only local traffic can access Lincoln between Santa Fe and Washington until further notice.

City of Wichita and Union Pacific Railroad officials are assessing conditions to determine appropriate repairs.

The affected section of Lincoln is likely to remain closed for at least several days.
