DERBY, Kansas — After back to back tragedies in just a week, the Derby community is remembering the lives lost.

Close to 40 people came out to Derby High School’s football stadium to remember the lives of 25-year-old Daniel Flores and 25-year-old Philipp “Doobie” Wellemeyer.

Both were students in the class of 2007 at Derby High. Those who came out today signed pictures and soccer balls to be given to members of both families. Organizers say they wanted to do something a little different to honor their classmates.

“It would be a great way to remember the guys right here on the football field where they both played football and soccer,” said Leslie Waldshmidt, the event’s organizer.

The event culminated with both Flores and Wellemeyers parents releasing balloons into the air for their fallen children.
