WICHITA, Kansas - A shooting on West McCormick near Newman University left a man dead Friday morning.
Police were called to 3665 West McCormick just after 7 a.m.
They found 44-year-old Efren Antonio Villarreal Alvarado in a vehicle at Santana Concrete with a gunshot wound to the chest and shoulder area.
“The employee was found by other employees arriving to work,” said Lt. Doug Nolte, Wichita Police Department.
The victim was alive when they transported him to the hospital, but he died about an hour later.
“Evidence at the scene suggests that it wasn’t self-inflicted but rather a homicide,” said Nolte. “I don’t know what was found at the scene, but evidence suggests it was a homicide.”
Police arrested a 33-year-old male Friday night in connection with the homicide and early Saturday morning took a second man into custody. The second suspect was a 40-year-old Hutchinson man.
The police don’t expect to make any more arrests and are confident they have all the players in the incident.
As of now they believe the motive was robbery and the victim and suspects knew each other.
According to the police, Villarreal-Alvarado arrives early to work and opens up Santana Concrete but they are unsure of his job title.
“It appears that’s his M.O., he gets there early, opens the business up and he arrives alone,” said Lt. Scott Heimerman with the Gang Felony Assault Unit with the Wichita Police Department.
Villarreal-Alvarado does not have a criminal past as do the suspects.
“The victim appeared to be a hard working man who was at the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Heimerman.
Names of suspects will not be released until they are formally charged but both have been booked into Sedgwick County jail on felony murder and aggravated robbery charges.
It is the fourth homicide of the year in Wichita.
