Apps paying users cash?

WICHITA, Kansas — There are thousands of smartphone apps available to download but did you know some of those apps are claiming to earn you extra cash?

A local tech expert says that some of these apps are in fact the real deal. You just have to know which one to download.

“I don’t think you can make a career out of it, but you can certainly earn some extra money on the side,” said David Hensley, the owner of Disciple Technologies.

Most of the smartphone apps revolve around the concept of mystery shopping, a tool used by market research companies to keep an eye out on products and services.

“You just take a picture with the app, you answer a few questions of the survey and you get paid a few bucks,” said Hensley.

American tech media website C-Net released a list of the top five apps to download if you want to make a little money. Rewardables and Gigwalk are two of the apps on that list.

“You go into a Wal-Mart or a Dillons and you use your phone take a picture of the item they’re asking you to or scan the bar code or it might just be a display that they set up in a store and they want you to check that display (to) make sure it’s set up correctly,” said Hensley.

The work can earn you up to $20 in cash or some apps reward with a point system where you can redeem points for gift cards or movie tickets.

“My first response to these apps is yeah they are legitimate and there are some illegitimate ones you want to be aware about, but if it sounds to good to be true it probably is,” said Hensley.

According to the Better Business Bureau there have been no complaints reported in the Wichita area but they are warning users to use at their own risk.
