Shocker success boosts local businesses

WICHITA, Kansas – The Wichita State Shockers are not showing any signs of slowing down after winning 21 straight games to start the season and now local businesses are hoping to cash in on the victory.

“We got K-State, KU, and WSU,” said Julie McCormick, WSU fan. “I think everybody roots for WSU when they’re not playing ours.”

Julie McCormick is hoping to add the colors yellow and black to her wardrobe this year.

“I’m just trying to find some Shockers gear,” said McCormick. “I don’t have any in my closet. Mine is all blue and red!”

McCormick stopped by the Sports Time Fan Shop looking to buy a couple of shirts to wear when she’s cheering on the Shockers.

“I haven’t seen this many Shockers fans in forever!” said Keely Molde, Sports Time Fan Shop supervisor.

This local sports store is just one of many across town that has been busy since the start of the college basketball season.

The supervisor says with the Wichita State Shockers being undefeated they’re just trying to keep up with the growing demand for merchandise.

“Everything from t-shirts to long sleeves to youth to toddlers,” said Molde. “The numbers of some of the guys as well.”

Fans of all ages have been showing their support by camping out in the cold weather doing whatever it takes to get tickets to see their team play in person.

It’s a once in a life time experience for those who have been cheering on the Shockers since the 1960s.

“We had people coming in telling us about those games,” said Shawn Hanson, Sports Time Fan Shop employee. “They still have same shirts and things like that which just amazes me. It gave a different perspective.”

Fans can catch the Shockers in action when they play against Loyola Tuesday night.
