Winfield student dies after cheerleading practice

WINFIELD, Kansas – Winfield schools has confirmed that 15-year-old Taylor Murphy, a 10th grader at the school, died after falling ill at practice.

Murphy fell ill Thursday at 5 p.m. during cheerleading practice.

She was transported to the hospital where she died.

The girls on the squad are subject to regular physicals, but there is no indication what caused her death.

The school’s principal tells KSN that students are having a tough time dealing with what happened.

“Our students have had a whole array of emotions. There is a lot of students that are sad. There are a lot of students that like to congregate and talk about what happened,” said Trenton Creeden, Winfield High School Principal.
