WICHITA, Kansas – An unlikely pair, Girl Scouts and Planned Parenthood.
Troop leaders and parents are upset at information going around from Kansans for Life saying the two work together.
“WAGGGS International Girl Scouts and Planned Parenthood work closely with one another,” said David Gittrich, Kansans for Life.
Gittrich is talking about the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts or WAGGS.
His organization has been sending out emails to spread the word to local parents saying the international connection with Planned Parenthood should have parents worried, but officials from Girl Scouts disagree.
“If people want to spread news, that’s great, they have that ability, we’re in the US and that’s a wonderful part of it, but we just want it to be factual,” said Muriel Berry, Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland.
Berry says the misinformation began after a conference on women’s issues that members of WAGGGS participated in.
Among the other participants were those that supported abortions and woman’s rights from a world view.
“So on the international level, there’s a close association, and then on the US Girl Scouts USA, there’s also an association,” said Gittrich.
But Berry refutes that, while the two organizations work together, they don’t have the same philosophies or purposes with WAGGGS focusing on international issues, like access to health care, while Girl Scouts, in the US focus on community involvement and empowerment.
“Somehow the misnomer was put out there that Girl Scouts of USA and it’s international association with Girl Scouts and girl guides was somehow inter-related with Planned Parenthood and that’s just simply false.”
Now the other big question that continues to come up is just where the money goes from cookie sales.
Berry says that the money spent on cookies stays local to support the troops and Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland.
