Naperville gym hot tub reopens after Legionnaires’

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (AP) — A Naperville gym has reopened its hot tub, more than two months after public health officials in suburban Chicago traced an outbreak Legionnaires’ disease to the whirlpool.

The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reports (http://bit.ly/KZ5mIg ) the hot tub at an LA Fitness opened last Friday. DuPage County public health officials closed the hot tub in late October after two men became sickened by the bacterial infection that can cause deadly pneumonia.

Legionnaires’ doesn’t spread from person to person. Instead, people get it from inhaling contaminated mist or vapor. Tainted shower water, air conditioning systems or whirlpool spas are among the ways bacteria get in the air.

Public health officials say the gym followed “state-recommended guidelines for appropriate remediation” to clean the hot tub.

The gym has remained open.
