SALEM — Proponents of President Barack Obama’s health care law have argued that expanding access to insurance would allow patients to seek care in doctors’ offices, relieving crowded emergency rooms burdened with providing expensive care to the uninsured. But a study by researchers at MIT, Harvard and Columbia found that people newly enrolled in Medicaid made 40 percent more visits to the emergency room, many of them for conditions that could be treated elsewhere.
