Officials report year’s 1st pediatric flu death

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The Mississippi State Department of Health is reporting the first confirmed pediatric influenza death for the 2013-2014 flu season.

The health department says in a news release Monday that the death was a child from north Mississippi with chronic underlying health conditions.

The release did not give the child’s age or other information because of privacy laws. Pediatric deaths are those of anyone less than 19 years old.

There have been 12 pediatric flu deaths reported in Mississippi since officials began reporting them during the 2007-2008 flu season. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
