High Point officer escapes serious injury in wreck

HIGH POINT, N.C. (AP) — A High Point police officer escaped serious injury in a weekend wreck.

Police say Officer A. Dykes may have fallen asleep when his patrol car hit a guard rail and caught fire around 6:15 a.m. Saturday.

Capt. Jason Henderson said Dykes was near the end of his shift that had started at 8 p.m. Friday. He was treated and released from High Point Regional Hospital for a hand injury.

Police say Dykes was not in pursuit of anyone at the time of the crash and appears to have fallen asleep at the wheel.

No one else was hurt.
