Wallabies center to have right ankle surgery

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Australia test center and goal kicker Christian Leali’ifano will have surgery on his oft-injured right ankle next week and the ACT Brumbies say they are not sure when the playmaker will be fit for the 2014 Super Rugby season.

Leali’ifano scored a try and kicked three conversions and three penalties in Australia’s 30-26 win last weekend over Wales, the Wallabies’ fourth in a row to end their season.

After major ankle reconstruction in 2012, Leali’ifano re-injured his ankle in a Rugby Championship match Oct. 5 in Argentina. However, he recovered in time to make the Wallabies’ European tour.

Brumbies director of rugby Laurie Fisher told local media Wednesday “Christian’s booked in for surgery and ready to go … it’s impossible to say how long it will have him out for.”
