McCrory to tour expanded NC cancer center

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Gov. Pat McCrory is leading a host of dignitaries as Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center opens its expanded comprehensive cancer center for a media tour.

The tour is scheduled for noon on Tuesday and will be followed by a news conference.

Among those expected to attend the event are Dr. John D. McConnell, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center CEO, and Lorrie Apel, wife of a former cancer patient.

The $125 million project adds four inpatient floors, a one-day hospital floor and one administrative floor, consolidating inpatient and outpatient services in a free-standing cancer hospital.

The expansion also increases the number of oncology inpatient beds to 148 acute care and 44 observation beds, from the 113-bed complement. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
