Heart disease led to death of former lawmaker

PHOENIX (AP) — The wife of former Arizona lawmaker Ben Miranda says her husband’s death was the result of heart disease.

Rep. Catherine Miranda announced Monday that she recently received information that the cause of her husband’s death was hypertensive cardiovascular disease, which resulted in a heart attack.

Ben Miranda died in November at the age of 64. He had served in the Arizona House from 2003 through 2010. He was an outspoken opponent of state immigration laws and was a leader in the Legislature’s Latino caucus.

His wife now holds his legislative seat.

On Monday, she said she was thankful for the support and prayers she has received since her husband’s death.
