Experts to propose gun policies at Virginia forum

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Experts on gun violence and mental health will recommend changes in Virginia policies at a forum in Charlottesville.

The public forum is set for Monday afternoon at the University of Virginia. It’s being led by U.Va. professor Richard Bonnie, a nationally recognized expert in mental health policy and criminal law who chaired a commission that made recommendations after the 2007 Virginia Tech shootings.

The new recommendations will focus on keeping firearms out of the hands of those most likely to do harm, including those with a history of violence or heavy drinking.

Lt. Gov.-elect Ralph Northam will deliver the keynote address.
