Blood donations needed for holiday season

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The BloodCenter of Wisconsin is holding a statewide campaign to build its blood supply for the holiday season.

The Milwaukee-based nonprofit organization supplies blood and blood products to hospitals throughout the state. Donations typically decline during the busy holiday season. BloodCenter spokeswoman Vicki Bohman says the organization needs 800 donors each day to fill the patient needs of the locations it serves.

Bohman tells the Stevens Point Journal Media ( ) the greatest need is for type O-negative, which is a universal blood type and is usually used in emergencies. She says the BloodCenter typically wants to have a three-day supply of the blood type, but currently has just a half-day supply.

The need comes during the time more people are on state roadways for the holidays and for deer hunting.
