LAS VEGAS (AP) — Investigators say a Nevada hospital wasn’t taking proper precautions when a mother who had become ill with a fever visited one of her twin babies in the intensive care unit.
A coroner later confirmed the mother and one baby died of tuberculosis, and health officials have been testing to determine whether other patients at Summerlin Hospital were infected.
A report from the Nevada Bureau of Health Care Quality and Compliance shows a doctor spoke with the parents at the baby’s bedside May 31, even though the mother had been running a fever of 103 and didn’t know why she was sick.
A nurse said months later that parents would have been discouraged from visiting or advised to wear a gown and mask if they were sick. But the report says it was unclear whether the mother wore the protective gear when she visited.
