DHEC gets $1M for breast, cervical cancer tests

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina’s health department is getting more money to offer screenings for breast and cervical cancer.

The Department of Health and Environmental Control said Monday that it had received a $1 million grant.

DHEC offers the screenings through its Best Chance Network. Department officials say the money means DHEC will be able to screen more than 10,000 women across the state.

The program offers free screenings to women between ages 47 and 64 who do not have health insurance and meet certain income guidelines. DHEC says more than 3,500 women in South Carolina are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.
