Executive Councilor Burton says cancer returns

BATH, N.H. (AP) — Longtime New Hampshire Executive Councilor Ray Burton says his cancer has returned and he won’t be running for re-election.

The 74-year-old Burton announced Sunday that he won’t be running again for the Executive Council or the Grafton County Commission. He said he’s been in and out of the hospital for several days and is heading to his Bath home to rest.

Burton announced in February that he had curable kidney cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy. After his cancer went into remission, he resumed his meeting and travel schedule.

Burton was elected to his first term in 1977. After a two-year absence, he was re-elected in 1981 and has been serving District 1 in northern New Hampshire ever since.
