8,000 health applicants given wrong tax credit

SEATTLE (AP) — Officials say that 8,000 health insurance applicants erroneously qualified for higher tax credits because of a system error in Washington state’s new exchange.

Richard Onizuka, CEO for the Washington Health Benefit Exchange, said Friday the system error was uncovered and corrected this week. The problem was traced to an inconsistency in file formats that were being shared between the state’s exchange and federal data.

The health exchange says that no payments have yet been processed and that applicants affected are being notified.
