160 collection sites in Maine for drug take back

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — More than 160 collection sites are available throughout Maine for residents to drop off unused, expired or unwanted prescription medication this weekend.

The U.S Drug Enforcement Administration’s national Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is Saturday. Maine sites will be available from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Collection sites will be set up throughout the country to provide a safe and convenient way to dispose of prescription drugs. The day is also designed to raise awareness about the potential abuse of prescription medications.

Law enforcement from local and state police and sheriff offices will staff the take-back locations.

The Maine Department of Public Safety says more than 22,000 pounds of unwanted drugs were collected in Maine during the last take-back effort in April.
