Ex US Navy officer wanted for murder dies in Chile

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — A former U.S. military officer wanted on murder charges in the 1973 killing of two Americans has died in Chile, but the wife of one of the victims is demanding further proof.

Former Navy Capt. Ray E. Davis was charged in the deaths of journalist Charles Horman and U.S. student Frank Teruggi, who were killed during Gen. Augusto Pinochet’s 1973-1990 dictatorship.

Davis was thought to be living in Florida and Chile’s Supreme Court had approved his extradition request last October. But he was secretly living in the Chilean capital. A Chilean death certificate shows that Davis died in Santiago on April 30.

Horman’s disappearance was the basis of the film “Missing.” His widow is demanding proof from the U.S. government that Davis’ pension was suspended to confirm that he’s dead.
