MAIZE, Kansas – Despite a tough loss at Derby last Friday, the Maize Eagles are still looking for big things this football season. In tonight’s Amateur Athlete of the Week, we introduce you to Chase White, one Eagle who is still flying high.

Speed, strength and ability to score the football are just a few of the many talents that make Maize senior running back, Chase White, one of the top running backs in the state. But, surprisingly, the Eagles’ four-year starter has somewhat flown under the radar.

“He tied the record in touchdowns last year for us so he knows how to get into the endzone,” said Gary Guzman, Maize High School football coach. “He runs hard. He runs downhill and he knows how to get into the endzone. He is a very special player and he’s gotten better every year. He has worked hard in the weight room, he is very physical. You’re right, a lot of people may not know about him but he’s definitely special to us.”

Chase was extra special in the Eagles’ week two upset of the former overall number one team in the state, Salina South. He blitzed the Cougars for 153 yards rushing on 18 carries and two touchdowns.

“It was a dog fight,” said Chase. “We worked hard to get that win. It took a lot.”

And one of the biggest keys to White’s on field success is endurance.

“I think I run harder as the game goes on,” said White. “The more I trust myself, the more I trust what we’re doing. I think as the game goes on the defense gets tired, and the way we practice, I don’t really get tired.”

White intends to play college football. And while White hasn’t gotten any offers yet, trading in Maize red for Manhattan purple to play for Bill Snyder at Kansas State is White’s ultimate goal.

“That’s a dream. That would be a dream.”

Next up for the Maize Eagles is Goddard this Friday at home.

Congratulations to Chase White for being nominated KSN’s Amateur Athlete of the Week. If you would like to nominate someone send us a note:
