Inmate sentenced on charges tied to escape

Benito Cardenas

NESS CITY, Kansas (AP) – A man already serving a life sentence for rape has been sentenced to 11 more years for charges tied to his escape from a Kansas jail.

Benito Cardenas Jr. apologized Tuesday before he was sentenced in back-to-back court hearings in WaKeeney and Ness City.

Cardenas cut through four bars in the Ness County jail and escaped in August 2012. Once free, he stole a van and fled north into Trego County, burglarizing a residence near Cedar Bluff Reservoir before accosting a Trego Center woman. He then fled east and twice tied up another woman.

Three months after his escape, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 25 years for raping someone younger than 14.
