African elephant at Tucson zoo is pregnant

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Tucson’s Reid Park Zoo is expecting an addition — another elephant.

Zoo officials on Tuesday announced that the zoo’s 24-year-old African elephant, Litsemba (semba) is expected to give birth next summer. Elephants have gestation periods of nearly two years.

Litsemba and the bull elephant who is the father-to-be arrived in Tucson from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in 2012.

The Tucson zoo says it’ll take extensive measures to protect the safety of both the mother and her unborn calf.

Litsemba has had two prior calves, both born in San Diego.
