State gets partial US funding for tobacco program

PHOENIX (AP) — State health director Will Humble says the federal government has agreed to provide partial funding for Arizona’s “Kick the Habit” tobacco cessation program.

Humble says the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will allow Arizona to obtain 50 percent federal funding for the state’s smokers helpline for services provided to Medicaid beneficiaries.

Medicaid provides federal funding to states for health care for lower-income people.

Humble says the new federal funding is important because Arizonans below the poverty line are 40 percent more likely to smoke than are people with higher incomes.
