WICHITA, Kansas – Wichita State freshman basketball player DJ Bowles has been denied medical clearance and will not play basketball for the Shockers.

The WSU-ICAA and medical staff made the decision.

Bowles suffered a cardiac arrest during a workout earlier this month.

After medical tests in Wichita and at the Mayo Clinic, he had surgery to have an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) installed.

Wichita State Director of Athletics Eric Sexton says the university will honor all four years of Bowles’ scholarship aid.

In a statement, Sexton said:

“Our main concern is the health and well-being of DJ for the rest of his life. He is an outstanding young man from a great family who has had a very traumatic 17 days.”

Sexton says he has extended the commitment to honor the scholarship to Bowles and his family. He hopes Bowles will stay and complete his education at Wichita State.

Bowles is a guard from Chattanooga, Tennessee. He played at Oldsmar Christian High School in Florida last season.
