MCKEESPORT, Pennsylvania (WPXI) – In 24 hours, a McKeesport family was changed forever.

Last year, their son had a bump on his leg. It was diagnosed as cancer.

“I can live every day without crying, but when you talk about it, it’s just,” Daneen Kowall said through the tears.

Kowall let us in on the moment her world turned upside down.

“Just immediately, our lives changed,” said Kowall.

Her stepson, Devin, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, an aggressive bone cancer. Doctors said they can’t stop it from spreading.

“It can happen to you,” said Devin’s aunt, Doreen Harris. “And it can happen to your family. It can happen to your child.”

Harris said, she remembers the exact day her sister came to her with the news.

“I remember her saying, don’t hug me. Just let me say what I have to say,” said Harris.

But as we talked to this family, something hopeful came to life — a Facebook page called “Devin’s Dreams,” an online bucket list and the community has opened its heart.

“They’re giving him what we can’t,” said Kowall.

He was fire chief for the day, had vacations down in Florida and a lobster dinner, although that one didn’t get rave reviews.

“Before something like this happens,” said Kowall. “All you do is watch the news, read the paper and look online and all you see is bad. And you don’t think too much good is around anymore, until something like this happens and the outpouring of love is just from strangers.”

“No one has our day but God,” said Harris. “And for us to say, ya know what, let’s count the days until we die, how about let’s count the days we’re living?”
