EMPORIA, Kansas – An unknown illness has proven fatal for many dogs in Lyon County.
Nearly 40 dogs have had to be euthanized since the illness first broke out in February.
Since the beginning of this month, the Emporia animal shelter has had to euthanize 13 dogs, eight alone last Friday.
Many of the dogs that were affected started out with a small cough that progressed to pneumonia and seizures, eventually proving to be fatal.
Veterinarian Floyd Dorsey says the shelter is taking all the necessary precautions in hopes that no other dogs come down with the illness
“We’ve quarantined the shelter and we’re trying not to take any dogs in and adopt any dogs out until we know for sure,” said Floyd.
Dorsey is urging local dog owners to be cautious and not frequent local dog parks or bring there dog around any unfamiliar dogs until they figure out what is causing this illness.
