WICHITA, Kansas – A 17-month-old child was pulled from a man-made pond near Hydraulic and I-135 Monday morning.

EMS responded to the call about a submersion around 7:40 to the 5100 block of South Madison.

The child was taken to Wesley Medical Center in critical condition.

The boy’s great-grandfather found him in the pond.

Neighbors say the little boy wandered out of the house and got into the pond.

“They’ve always had a nice, decorative yard, and they’ve always taken care of things. It’s just one of those unfortunate accidents that happened,” said Sue Hubbs, neighbor.

“We’re assuming the child wandered out of the house, but we’re still investigating to find out exact details,” said Sgt. Kelly O’Brien, Wichita Police Department.

Neighbors say family kept the doors locked and the small child likely got out through a dog door and found his way out.
