Columbia mayor participating in sickle cell walk

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin is taking part in a walk to raise awareness of sickle cell disease.

Benjamin is this year’s ambassador for the 8th Annual Dr. James R. Clark Memorial Sickle Cell Walk on Saturday. The two-mile event raises scholarship funds for high school seniors and college students with sickle cell disease.

The James R. Clark Memorial Sickle Cell Foundation is a nonprofit United Way and Community Health Charities agency that serves sickle cell patients and their families in central and upper South Carolina. Its services include newborn screening, genetic screening and counseling and nursing case management.
