NY nurse attacked by patient awarded $5M

VALLEY STREAM, N.Y. (AP) — A Long Island nurse who was left disabled and blind in one eye after a former psychiatric patient attacked her has been awarded nearly $5 million.

According to Newsday (http://bit.ly/14GMA1g ), a state Supreme Court judge set the compensation for past and future medical care for Marie Sweeney.

She was attacked at Franklin Hospital Medical Center in Valley Stream in 2010. The former patient, Donte Oakes, used a broken chair leg to assault her during a group-therapy session. He’s serving an 11-year sentence.

After the award was made Monday, Sweeney sued the hospital and its network, the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System. The suit claims they failed to protect workers.

The hospital says it has taken all reasonable steps to safeguard employees.
