NC ferry crew cited for handling medical emergency

MANNS HARBOR, N.C. (AP) — The N.C. Department of Transportation is honoring seven crew members of a ferry on the Hatteras-Ocracoke run for their actions during a medical emergency in June.

DOT Secretary Tony Tata awarded the crew of the M/V Croatoan Wednesday with the Ferry Division’s Extra Mile Award.

On June 2, the Croatoan was en route from Hatteras to Ocracoke when Capt. Shawn Gray collapsed in the wheelhouse. He was unresponsive and not breathing. Crew members administered emergency medical procedures to Gray while another officer took control of the helm and proceeded to the Ocracoke dock.

Other crew members secured professional medical help from a passenger and operations personnel on shore contacted Hyde County Emergency Medical Services.

Gray has made a complete recovery and returned to work last week. He attended the presentation.
