WICHITA, Kansas – Wichita police say 32-year-old Carl Cooper died after being stabbed early Sunday morning in the chest.
It happened around 3:50 a.m. in the 300 block of North Clifton in College Hill Park.
Residents who live in the College Hill Neighborhood woke up to find a lot of police activity.
“Some of our neighbors said they tried to go on their morning walks, and they were told it was a crime scene and that they shouldn’t be in the area,” said Julie Christensson, College Hill resident.
Investigators say two men chased Cooper down after seeing him break into a friend’s car.
“He was inside a vehicle that didn’t belong to him when the owner of that vehicle stopped him inside. Our two suspects who were in the area of this gave chase,” said Capt. Brent Allred, Wichita Police Department.
When they caught up with him, police say the men stabbed Cooper several times.
Police say after Cooper was stabbed he was heavily bleeding, but he was able to make his way across the street asking for help.
“They had gone to bed that night, and one of the younger girls was downstairs sleeping on the couch when she heard someone knocking at the window. She ran upstairs to get her parents and they called 911,” said Christensson.
Cooper was transported in critical condition to Wesley Hospital. He died Sunday afternoon.
Two men, 34-year-old Trenton Custer and 30-year-old Kyle Carter, have been arrested in connection to his death.
Cooper is the eleventh homicide victim of 2013.
Police urge residents to not take matters into their own hands and to let officers handle the situation.
