Man accused of murdering a Derby mother is charged

WICHITA, Kansas – A man accused of murdering a Derby woman made his first appearance Thursday afternoon in Sedgwick County Court.

Charles A. Beck Jr. was charged with first-degree premeditated murder of Lonnie Staggs and attempted first-degree murder of her son.

Police responded to a call in 1400 block of North Nixon Sunday morning where they found Staggs dead and her son stabbed in the neck.

Nixon was found later that evening in Missouri and turned himself in.

The preliminary hearing is set for September 19.
