WICHITA, Kansas – A fire Wednesday night that caused heavy smoke damage to businesses at a strip mall was intentionally set.

Firefighters arrived at the mall near 31st and Seneca just before midnight.

They found fire in the office of one business, which spread to the attic above but was put out quickly.

The smoke from that fire spread to several other stores in the mall. Firefighters had to open them up to assess the extensive smoke damage.

A fire department official says the blaze and smoke did about $350,000 worth of damage to the businesses.

Fire investigators say there was forced entry into a back door.

“We know through our investigation that this was not accidental event and no accidental reason for the fire to occur and that it was an intentional act of a human hand,” said Capt. Stuart Bevis, Wichita Fire Department.

If you have any information, you are urged to call the fire investigators tipline at 337-9146 or Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.
