BUTLER COUNTY, Kansas – Authorities in Butler County are still looking for Jan Tracy Kilbourne, the man suspected of shooting and wounding a Butler County Sheriff’s deputy.
Butler County Sheriff Kelly Herzet says officers searching for Kilbourne are pursuing tips about his location.
They believe he could be headed to Liberal, where he has several friends.
The department is currently concentrating on contacting Kilbourne’s family and friends.
Kilbourne is suspected in the shooting early Monday after a deputy went to investigate suspicious activity near Highway 54 and Santa Fe Lake Road.
The sheriff’s deputy got the information from all three people in the car, but when he returned to his patrol car to check out the occupants’ information, the driver opened fire, hitting the deputy in the right shoulder.
The deputy was able to return fire.
Kilbourne then fled.
Kilbourne was last seen wearing blue jeans, a green colored t-shirt, and boots.
He does have a prior warrant for his arrest.
A man and woman who were both in the car were taken into custody.
It is not known whether they will face any charges.
The deputy was released from an area hospital and is now resting at home.
