WICHITA, Kansas – Wichita police say 40-year-old Richard A. Baker was killed in an accident Tuesday afternoon at I-235 and Meridian.

It happened just after 3:30 p.m.

According to witnesses, a northbound white car was attempting to make a left turn from Meridian to K-96.

A van, driven by Baker, was traveling southbound on Meridian.

Police think the white car had the green light.

“The van entered the intersection and was struck by the white car, spun and rolled. The driver of the van was partially ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. He is 40-year-old white male,” said Captain Rusty Leeds, Wichita Police Department.

Police say an 81-year-old woman, the driver of the white car, was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say Baker was not wearing his seatbelt.

This traffic accident marks the 23rd fatal accident so far this year in Wichita.

Last year at this time, the city had 14 fatal accidents.
