Liberal man injured in mobile home fire dies

LIBERAL, Kan. (AP) — A Liberal man has died from burns suffered in a mobile home fire near the Oklahoma state line.

Curtis Phillips died Thursday after he was removed from life support. He was badly injured Wednesday, sustaining third-degree burns on 66 percent of his body and suffering severe burns to his lungs.

His brother, Larry Phillips, is the managing editor of the Leader & Times and responded to a scanner call to cover the fire. When he arrived his brother and his common-law wife, Lori Phillips, were outside the burning home. Onlookers had managed to remove the couple minutes before the entire house was consumed in flames.

Lori Phillips remains hospitalized at a Wichita burn unit. Larry Phillips called what happened “heartbreaking.”
