Merriam OKs deal for Google Fiber

MERRIAM, Kansas (AP) – The Merriam City Council has approved a deal that will bring Google Fiber to the Kansas City suburb.

The city council approved the deal Monday.

Merriam becomes the 17th city in the Kansas City market to come to terms with Google for the construction of a fiber-based network. The network promises upload and download speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second – about 100 times as fast as most Americans can buy for their homes.

But Google has yet to reach terms in some of the larger suburbs, including Independence, Mo., and Overland Park, Kan.
