Congo: 1 dead in Goma following explosion

KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — Congo’s Minister of Information Lambert Mende confirmed that one person had died and eight were wounded overnight when two more shells exploded in Goma in the neighborhoods of Majengo and Mabanga-North.

It brings to 13 the number of people killed in Goma by shelling from rebel positions just north of the city.

The shelling began last week, after a United Nations intervention brigade launched an assault on the rebels, alongside Congolese troops.

Goma, a city of 1 million, briefly fell to the M23 rebels last year. They seized the strategic town despite the presence of thousands of U.N. peacekeepers who failed to intervene because their mandate only allows them to protect civilians.

The newly formed U.N. brigade was created in the wake of criticism following the fall of Goma.
